When the Goalposts Move

Recognizing Shifting Standards Before They Cost You Excerpt: The most insidious unfairness isn’t the kind that announces itself — it’s the kind that quietly rearranges the furniture while you’re looking the other way. Here’s how to notice it before it’s too late.

There’s a unique frustration in meeting expectations only to discover the expectations have changed. Shifting standards often appear quietly  through changing feedback, new priorities, or unclear performance measures. One day your work is praised; the next, it suddenly “needs more.” Over time, this creates confusion, self-doubt, and exhaustion. The clearest sign is inconsistency: success is no longer defined the way it once was. Protect yourself by documenting expectations, asking direct questions, and seeking clarity early. Recognizing shifting standards isn’t negativity  it’s awareness. You deserve to understand the rules before being judged by them.
